Beacon Hill Wood, Somerset

September 18, 2018

This lovely little woodland is on the edge of the Mendip Hills overlooking Shepton Mallet in Somerset. I've been meaning to visit the wood for some time so on Sunday night I made the decision I would pop along the following morning to explore.

I knew this woodland was a good place for finding fungi and the weather forecast (overcast) looked perfect for photographing fungi. Shortly after setting off yesterday morning I was driving up Burrington Combe in rapidly thickening fog. I love a misty woodland, but my excitement nearly got the better of me and I almost stopped at Stockhill Wood. I feared the fog would blow away before I reached Beacon Hill. I needn't have worried as, to my relief, I discovered the fog was just as thick at Beacon Hill.

The woodland was beautifully atmospheric and so my plan of crawling around on the woodland floor was quite forgotten for a couple of hours until the air cleared.
