This is a field my wife and I often walk past on our regular walks together. When we are not putting the world to rights, I’ll marvel at the changes going on in this field. It only seems like a few weeks ago there were sheep grazing here, but this week the recent sowing has produced these little seedlings. Maize, if I were to take a guess.
In all but a couple of places along the farm track, it’s just a field of bare soil with a random scattering of tiny green shoots. But stand in the right place and you can make out the parallel straight lines from the farmer’s drill. At this position on the track, these lines become wonderful ‘S’ shaped curves where the farmer had to negotiate a tree.
I spotted this image on today’s walk and so returned with my infrared camera. It's hard to see with the naked eye in colour but, as I was failing to explain to an inquisitive passerby, infrared light behaves differently to visible light and these little green shoots glow brightly against the dark earth. A moderate telephoto lens helped to compress the scene and eliminate distractions.
